Box Score DENVER -University of Denver men's soccer freshman forward Alex Tarnoczi (Castle Rock, Colo.) scored a pair of goals and sophomore midfielder Matt Kirby (Beaumont, Texas) had three assists, as the Pioneers beat Belmont 6-1 at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Denver (2-2-0) got things going early, when Kirby sent a cross to junior forward Jesse Henderson (Detroit, Mich.), who one-touched a pass to senior midfielder Collin Audley (Fort Collins, Colo.) for a goal in the seventh minute.
Belmont (0-3-1) tied the game in the 15th minute. Justin Ferguson headed in a corner kick from Alex Davis.
In the 23rd minute, Kirby passed the ball from the midfield to sophomore midfielder Jarod Stigall (Plano, Texas), who beat the defenders and goalkeeper in the middle of the box.
Tarnoczi sealed the game for the Pioneers with a pair of goals, burying a one-timer of a Kirby rebound in the 56th minute, and dribbling through the defense into the box and past the goalkeeper in the 68th minute.
Redshirt freshman Jordan Softli (Sammamish, Wash.) got his own rebound and pushed a shot from inside the box in the 72nd minute. Tarnoczi got the assist.
The Pioneers scored their final goal with 1:29 remaining. Senior midfielder Austin Haller (Lancaster, Pa.) touched a short pass on a free kick to sophomore midfielder Alex DeCosta (Dallas, Texas), who nailed a shot into the lower left corner.
The Pioneers return to action on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m., when Denver hosts the Washington Huskies at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
