Pioneers Play Huskies to 0-0 Tie

Box Score

DENVER - Junior goalkeeper Joe Willis (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded his first shutout of the season, but the Denver and Washington men's soccer teams played to a 0-0 tie after two overtimes at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium on Sunday night.

In the 40th minute, Denver (2-2-1) threatened with a flurry of chances.  Standing over a dead ball, sophomore midfielder Jarod Stigall (Plano, Texas) struck a shot off the crossbar from 34 yards out.  Moments later, senior defender Kris Banghart (Fort Collins, Colo.) narrowly missed again, placing a header on goal, which was deflected just inches over the crossbar by Washington goalkeeper Rylan Hawkens.

In the first half, Denver recorded 12 shots and held Washington (2-3-1) without a shot.

After Washington had its first two shots during the 51st minute of the game, Stigall shot a free kick in the 57th minute. The shot was tipped above the left corner of the goal by Hawkins.

With four minutes left in regulation, senior midfielder Collin Audley (Fort Collins, Colo.) collected a loose ball and drilled a shot, but Hawkins made a diving stop for the save.

A minute into the second overtime, UW forward Brent Richards had a breakaway shot on goal, but Willis dove to the left side of the goal and stopped the ball. With seven minutes remaining, freshman defender Drew Beckie (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) shot the ball wide of the post.

In the game, the Pioneers outshot the Huskies 23-12 and held an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks.

Willis finished the night with five saves, while Hawkens had nine.

Denver next travels to Fullerton, Calif., for the Fullerton Classic. The Pioneers will take on Cal State Northridge on Friday and Cal State Fullerton on Sunday.
