DENVER - The Denver men's tennis team opened the dual season with a convincing 7-0 win over in-state rival Northern Colorado tonight at CAC-Inverness.
DU improves to 1-0 with the win, while UNC falls to 0-1.
The Pioneers won the doubles point and all six singles matches in a strong showing. Andrew Landwerlen (Las Cruces, N.M.) and David Simson (Vienna, Austria) won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Yannick Weihs (Guntramsdorf, Austria) and Jens Vorkefeld (Ostercappeln, Germany) won 8-3 at No. 2 and Enej Bonin (Koper, Slovenia) and Fabio Biasion (Velbert, Germany) won 8-1 at No. 3.
Vorkefeld and Landwerlen highlighted Denver's undefeated singles play with 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
"We came out and played a good match for the dual opener," DU head coach Danny Westerman said. "We beat a pretty young team in Northern Colorado, but I was pleased with our play and effort."
DU returns to action against Radford on Saturday, Jan. 23 in Lincoln, Neb.
