Badgers Take Three Points From DU

Box Score MADISON, Wis. - Michael Davies scored the game-winner and Brett Bennett had 30 saves as No. 3 Wisconsin edged top-ranked Denver, 4-3, before a sellout crowd of 15,237 tonight at Kohl Center.

Wisconsin takes three of four points from Denver in the series and improves to 14-6-4, 10-5-3 WCHA. The Pioneers' five-game unbeaten streak and six-game unbeaten streak against Wisconsin ends with the loss. Denver falls to 14-6-4, 10-4-4.

Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) led the Pioneers with one goal and two assists for his first career effort and finished the weekend with five points. Seniors Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Tyler Ruegsegger (Lakewood) also scored for the Pioneers, who return to action next weekend at North Dakota.

"We had a bad start, but did a great job fighting back," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "Give Wisconsin credit for playing a good series. We'll get back to work on Monday and prepare for a better weekend at North Dakota."

Ben Street put Wisconsin up 1-0 at 15:47 of the first period with assists going to Michael Davies and Ryan McDonagh. The Badgers dominated play in the opening stanza, outshooting the Pioneers 15-4.

Donovan answered for DU at 2:32 of the second, but Wisconsin quickly regained the lead 23 seconds later on a Craig Smith goal. Jordy Murray made it 3-1 with a backhanded goal from the low slot at 6:25 until Rakhshani made it a one-goal game at 13:43 after burying a beautiful setup by Donovan.

DU tied the game when Ruegsegger blast from the right circle beat Bennett at 6:36 of the third. Davies then tallied the game-winning goal at 13:30.

Marc Cheverie (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) played well in defeat with 34 saves. DU went 2-for-5 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.

Notes: DU is now 13-3-3 all-time at the Kohl Center. DU remains tied for first with Miami in the latest PairWise Rankings.
