Box Score DENVER - No. 2 Denver was outplayed tonight by unranked Alaska Anchorage in WCHA action, but the Pioneers escaped with a 1-1 overtime tie before 5,300 fans at Magness Arena. DU moves to 13-5-3 overall and 9-3-3 in the WCHA, while Alaska Anchorage goes to 6-12-1, 4-10-1.
Tyler Ruegsegger (Lakewood) scored for the Pioneers and Curtis Leinweber scored the Seawolves' lone tally. Ruegsegger's wrap-around goal from the slot gave DU an early 1-0 lead at 7:13 of the first period, but UAA tied it at 1-1 with Leinweber's goal from the low slot at 13:08.
"We were very sluggish and Anchorage played a hard-fought, smart hockey game," DU head coach George Gwozdecky. "Our play and effort from most of our forwards and defensemen was unacceptable tonight. I expect our team to have a lot of energy tomorrow night."
The Seawolves beat the Pioneers to loose pucks all night and made it difficult for DU to get into its transition game. DU's line of Ruegsegger, Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Joe Colborne (Calgary, Alberta) combined for just three shots on goal.
Marc Cheverie (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) was DU's best player on the ice. The junior goaltender stopped 27 of 28 shots for Denver, which is 2-0-1 in its last three games. Jon Olthuis stopped 31 of 32 shots to earn the tie. Both teams were held scoreless on the power play.
DU and UAA play game two of the series tomorrow night at 7:07 p.m.
Notes: Ruegsegger increased his career-best point streak to 10 games. Colborne has 1-5=6 over his last three games, while Patrick Wiercioch has 1-4=5 over his last four. DU is 9-1-1 on Friday's and 3-4-2 on Saturday's. The Pioneers are 1-1-1 against the Seawolves this season.
