Box Score DENVER - No. 1 Boston College completed its sweep of No. 6/8 Denver, shutting out the Pioneers, 3-0, Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of 6,027 at Magness Arena.
"BC is the gold standard in college hockey right now and they are frustrating to play against," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "We were better tonight, but we have a lot of areas to work on to be ready for Wisconsin."
Freshman goaltender Sam Brittain (Calgary, Alberta), who has only allowed three goals in his first two collegiate games, made 30 saves in the loss.
With the loss, DU falls to 1-2-1 on the season as BC remains undefeated at 3-0-0.
The Eagles jumped out to a fast start thanks to a Jimmy Hayes unassisted tally at 1:28 in the first period. Tommy Cross added BC's second goal at 8:57 in the second period. With Brittain pulled for an extra Pioneer attacker, Cam Atkinson tacked on an empty-net goal with 16 seconds remaining to seal the win.
At 3:30 in the third period, BC's Philip Samuelsson received a game misconduct for contact to the head, but the Pioneers could not capitalize on the five-minute major penalty. DU, which was outshot 33-20, was 0-for-9 on the power play tonight and 0-for-17 during the series.
BC's Parker Milner made 20 saves in his first shutout of the season.
Denver hosts Wisconsin next weekend in its first WCHA action of the season. Puck drops on Friday, Oct. 22 at 7:37 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 23 at 7:07 p.m.
Notes: The Pioneers have not been swept at home since March 9-10, 2007 when they lost two games to Wisconsin in the WCHA playoffs. The last time DU was swept at home by a nonconference opponent was Nov. 8-9, 1991 when they faced Providence.
