Box Score DENVER - Senior captain
Kyle Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta) scored two third-period goals as No. 11/13 Denver battled back to a 2-2 tie with No. 14/15 Wisconsin Saturday night in front of 5,905 fans at Magness Arena.
The Pioneers move 2-2-2, 1-0-1 WCHA with the tie and take three points from the 2010 runner-up Badgers (3-2-1, 0-1-1 WCHA).
"I think it was a good weekend. We learned more about each other and about our team," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "I am proud of the way our senior class stepped it up tonight."
Wisconsin took an early lead as Mark Zengerle capitalized on a Pioneer turnover to score at 4:17 in the first period. The Badgers would take advantage of another Denver miscue in the second period with Sean Dolan putting Wisconsin ahead 2-0 at 8:17.
Ostrow, who was scoreless through the first five games, cut the deficit in half at 8:18 in the third period, scoring off of a Jesse Martin (Edmonton, Alberta) faceoff win at 8:18. Ostrow tied the score at 2-2 when he scored again at 15:16. Anthony Maiani (Shelby Township, Mich.) and David Makowski (Wildwood, Mo.) assisted on the play.
After a scoreless overtime, the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
In his third-straight start, freshman Sam Brittain (Calgary, Alberta) made 25 saves in the tie, while Wisconsin's Scott Gudmandson stopped 36 Pioneer shots.
Both teams were held to 0-for-3 on the power play, and DU outshot the Badgers 38-27.
The Pioneers continue WCHA action next weekend, traveling to North Dakota. Puck drop on Friday is 6:37 p.m. MST and Saturday at 6:07 p.m. MST.
Notes: DU celebrated Parents' Weekend as the Pioneer hockey parents and players were recognized on the ice during the first intermission. Ostrow, Martin and Maiani were reunited tonight on the first line. The trio has combined for 239 career points at DU.
