Box Score GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Corban Knight tallied two goals and one assist as No. 8 North Dakota rallied from a pair of one-goal deficits to beat No. 12 Denver, 4-3, in college hockey action tonight before 11,616 fans at Engelstad Arena.
Jason Zucker (Las Vegas) led DU with two goals and Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) also scored for the Pioneers (2-3-2, 1-1-1 WCHA). Sam Brittain took the loss with 26 saves.
"We had too many breakdowns with and without the puck tonight," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "We will play better as a team and group tomorrow night."
Dillon Simpson and Mike Cichy added goals for the Fighting Sioux (4-2-1, 3-0-0) and Aaron Dell got the win with 14 stops.
North Dakota outshot Denver, 30-17, including 11-1 in the middle period to stop a two-game losing streak and end DU's two-game unbeaten streak.
Zucker buried a Shawn Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta) feed to give DU an early 1-0 lead, but Dillon Simpson's first career score tied the game 1-1 at 11:51 of the first stanza.
Donovan weaved through the North Dakota defense and scored a beautiful unassisted goal at 1:53 of the middle period, but goals by Cichy and Knight gave North Dakota its first lead.
Knight scored on the power play at 1:13 of the third period to give the Fighting Sioux a 4-2 lead. Zucker's second goal made the final score 4-3.
Jason Gregoire added two assists for North Dakota. Denver didn't capitalize on its one power-play opportunity, while North Dakota was 1-3.
The Pioneers and Fighting Sioux play the series finale tomorrow night at 6:07 p.m. MT.
Notes: UND alum and NHL great Ed Belfour dropped the ceremonial first puck prior to the game. Zucker also twice in DU's 4-2 win over Wisconsin last weekend.
