Box Score SEATTLE, Wash. -Powered by goals from juniors Jarod Stigall (Plano, Texas) and Kellan Christensen (Layton, Utah), the University of Denver men's soccer team (8-5-4, 5-2-2 MPSF) defeated Seattle University (4-10-3, 2-6-1 MPSF) 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Championship Field in Seattle, Washington.
"This by far has been the toughest conference road-trip of the season for our team," said head coach Bobby Muuss. "Traveling from Denver to California and then to Seattle took a lot out of our team and I couldn't be more excited that we came away with two wins. Today wasn't our best performance, but our team found a way to win when it counted. Using a great performance from our senior goalie Joe Willis and the 18 guys that played today, we put ourselves in a great position heading into the final weekend of the regular season."
The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute as Stigal headed a Mark Weigand (Fort Wayne, Ind.) corner into the top corner of the net. The goal is Stigal's eighth of the season, bringing his season point total to 22.
Christensen put the Pioneers up 2-0 in the 71st minute after slipping a Michael Perry (Overland Park, Kan.) cross past the Seattle keeper, scoring his fourth of the season. Perry provided the cross to Christensen after receiving a one-time pass from Stigal.
Senior keeper Joe Willis (St. Louis, Mo.) made four saves for the Pioneers, bringing his weekend total to 12 saves, while recording his fourth shut-out of the season.
The win moves the Pioneers into first place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's Mountain Division with a 5-2-2 league record.
Up next, the Pioneers return home to host their final game of the regular season in CIBER Field against Air Force on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. Denver will recognize its four seniors, Perry, Willis, Marc Kocel (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Teale Stone (Tulsa, Okla.) in a pre-game ceremony. The game will be available via Pioneer Vision and Live Stats.
