Box Score DENVER - University of Denver men's basketball sophomore guard Brian Stafford (Walnut Creek, Calif.) scored a season-high 22 points for the second consecutive game to lead the Pioneers to a 62-57 victory over Arkansas-Little Rock on Thursday night in Magness Arena.
Senior guard Nate Rohnert (Parker, Colo.) added 11 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for the Pioneers (15-11, 8-7 SBC).
"I thought we played well," head coach Joe Scott said. "We had nine turnovers and did a good job of getting to the foul line, but we need to do a better job of converting those shots."
Denver led by as many as 14 in the first half, but a late push by the Trojans (7-19, 3-12 SBC) resulted in a 28-22 Denver lead at the break. DU shot an uncharacteristic 4-of-11 from the free throw line in the opening stanza, but made six shots from beyond the arc to maintain a six-point advantage at the break.
The Pioneers opened the second half hitting their first five field goals and never relinquished the lead. Denver shot 50.0 percent from the field on 20-of-40 shooting, compared to UALR's 37.0 percent (17-of-46). Denver also led the Trojans in assists (14-6), blocks (7-0), and steals (7-2).
With the win, Denver improves to 14-1 at home this season, including a flawless 8-0 home conference record. The Pioneers' 15 wins also match their total victories last season. UALR falls to 7-19 overall, dropping their fourth-straight decision.
The Trojans were led by junior Solomon Bozeman, who had 15 points and three assists. Junior Derrick Bails chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds, falling just short of a double-double.
The Pioneers begins a two-game road swing this weekend when they travel to face the University of New Orleans on Saturday at 6 p.m. MT.
