Maiani, Vossberg lead Pioneers to 5-2 Win over Huskies

Box Score

DENVER - Anthony Maiani (Shelby Township, Mich.) and Brandon Vossberg (St. Paul, Minn.) both scored a goal and added a pair of assists, as No. 2 Denver beat Michigan Tech 5-2 at Magness Arena on Friday night.

"It was so important to get contributions from Maiani's line tonight," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "To be a contender, to be a really good team, you need to have more than one line functioning out there. Tonight we had a different line that was a threat, and obviously they carried the team for us."

The Pioneers increased their winning streak to seven games and improved to 21-6-4 overall. Michigan Tech fell to 5-23-1.

Cody Brookwell (Calgary, Alberta), Tyler Ruegsegger (Lakewood, Colo.) and Kyle Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta) also scored for the Pioneers, while Marc Cheverie (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) tallied 30 saves.

The Pioneers jumped to an early lead, when Brookwell buried a pass from Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) just 1:22 into the game with Ruegsegger also getting the assist.

Malcolm Gwilliam tied the game for the Huskies at the 11:56 mark in the first period, and the teams headed to the first break knotted up at 1-1.

Ruegsegger put DU back on top with three minutes remaining in the second period, getting assists from John Lee (Moorhead, Minn.) and Cheverie, who earned his second assist of the season.

Ostrow scored 6:14 into the final period off assists from Maiani and Vossberg. After Michigan Tech's Brett Olson cut the DU lead back to one at the 7:39 mark on a shorthanded goal, Maiani stretched the lead back out with a goal from Vossberg and Chris Nutini (Centennial, Colo.). Vossberg sealed the victory with a goal off assists from Ostrow and Maiani.

Denver outshot the Huskies, 42-32. Neither team scored on the power play with Denver killing three and Michigan Tech killing four chances.

Denver and Michigan Tech conclude the series at Magness Arena on Saturday at 7:07 p.m. MT.
