Box Score MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama guard Tim Williams hit a game-winning jumper with six seconds on the clock to lift the Jaguars to a 54-52 victory over the University of Denver men's basketball team Thursday night at the Mitchell Center.
The Pioneers (16-12, 9-8 SBC) were led by sophomore guard Brian Stafford (Walnut Creek, Calif.) and freshman guard Chase Hallam (Mesquite, Texas), who had 16 and 15 points, respectively.
However, South Alabama (16-14, 8-10 SBC) forced 21 Denver turnovers in the game, including 12 in the final 15 minutes as the Jaguars ended the game on a 31-7 run to overcome a 22-point deficit.
"Turnovers are what did us in," head coach Joe Scott said. "It gave them a chance at the end, and Tim Williams hit shots at the end."
Williams scored six of his game-high 22 points in the final 31 seconds.
The Pioneers built a 22-point lead with 15:11 remaining in the second half, but the Jaguars clawed their way back with a 20-2 run in the second half.
After South Alabama's Williams nailed a three-pointer to cut the DU lead to one with 1:28 remaining, Stafford went 1-for-2 from the line to give Denver a 50-48 lead.
Williams drilled another three-pointer with 31 seconds left to give South Alabama its first lead since the 6:37 mark in the first half, and his final field goal gave the Jaguars the victory.
Denver was on fire from three-point range in the first half, hitting 9-of-13 from beyond the arc - the most by the Pioneers in a half this season.
South Alabama took a brief, two-point lead with 7:03 remaining, but the Pioneers ended the half on a 19-3 run to take a 33-19 lead to the half.
The Pioneers return home for the regular season finale on Saturday, when they face Louisiana-Lafayette at 7 p.m. MT.
