LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 49 Denver men's tennis team returned to action in fine fashion Saturday afternoon in Lubbock, Texas. Playing their first match since Feb. 14, the Pioneers upset No. 25 Arizona, 4-3, this afternoon at McLeod Tennis Center. DU improves to 8-1 with the win, while Arizona falls to 6-3.
Senior Yannick Weihs (Guntramsdorf, Austria) clinched the win for the Pioneers in the last match of the day at No. 1 singles. Weihs defeated Jay Goldman 7-6(3), 6-1.
"Today was a great win for our team," DU head coach Danny Westerman said. "After losing a heartbreaking doubles point, we came out very excited for singles. I thought that was the key to the match. We played confident, energized tennis. I am very proud of the way we competed today."
After losing the doubles point on a dramatic 16-14 tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles, DU's Andrew Landwerlen (Las Cruces, N.M.) stayed unbeaten at 9-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles to tie the score at 1-1.
Arizona gained a 2-1 lead after a win at No. 4 singles, but Jens Vorkefeld (Ostercappeln, Germany) tied it at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5.
Enej Bonin (Kopar, Slovenia) gave DU a brief 3-2 lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 before David Simson (Vienna, Austria) fell in straight sets at No. 2 singles.
DU plays No. 32 Texas Tech tomorrow morning.
