Marc Cheverie (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) was named Player of the Year by College Hockey News this week. Senior captain
Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) joined Cheverie on the All-CHN first team, while
Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) was named to the All-CHN rookie team.
Cheverie and Rakhshani were named Hobey Baker Award Top-10 finalists after leading Denver to a 27-10-4 record, the WCHA regular-season championship and NCAA tournament in 2009-10. Donovan helped Team USA to the gold medal at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship and was one of the best rookie defensemen in collegiate hockey.
Cheverie posted a 24-6-3 record with a 2.08 goals against average, .932 save percentage and six shutouts as the Pioneers won their 12th WCHA title, Gold Pan Trophy and Wells Fargo Denver Cup title. Cheverie was named WCHA Player of the Year after claiming the goaltending title with a 2.05 goals against average and also led WCHA in wins (17), save percentage (.934) and shutouts (4) in league games.
Cheverie set DU shutout minutes mark at 223:51 and tied Peter Mannino's school record with his third consecutive shutout at Minnesota on Oct. 24. He was named AHCA National Player of the Month for October and named INCH National Player of the Week for Oct. 6-12 after becoming the first goaltender to shut out Minnesota in back-to-back games. Cheverie earned All-WCHA first-team honors and was a four-time Red Baron WCHA Defensive Player of the Week this season. He ranks first all-time at Denver in save percentage (.926) and shutout minutes (223:51), third in goals against average (2.21), fourth in shutouts (10) and ninth in wins (48).
Rakhshani earned All-WCHA first-team honors after capturing the WCHA scoring title with 35 points on 15 goals and 20 assists in 28 league games. The Lowe's Senior Class Award finalist led the Pioneers with a career-high 50 points on 21 goals and 29 assists overall. Rakhshani was named INCH National Player of the Week on Jan. 5 after earning MVP honors at the Wells Fargo Denver Cup. He finished his four-year career with 151 points on 60 goals and 91 assists in 156 games.
Donovan tallied 21 points on seven goals and 14 assists in 36 games. He was named Red Baron WCHA Rookie of the Week on March 3 after helping the Pioneers to a two-game sweep at Minnesota State. Donovan added two power-play goals and 50 PIMs in his rookie campaign.
