Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - Freshman forward Kristen Hamilton (Littleton, Colo.) scored a game-winning goal with 2:55 remaining in regulation to give the University of Denver women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over host Gonzaga on Sunday afternoon.
"It was a dog fight. Gonzaga plays very hard and with a lot of passion," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "We had some chances early that we should have put away. They had some chances, but Lara Campbell made some great saves. We kind of persevered, and Kristen scored an unbelievable goal with virtually no angle."
Denver (5-1) struck first, when senior midfielder Kelsey Quinn (Peach Tree City, Ga.) buried a cross from sophomore forward Kalie Vaughn (Fort Collins, Colo.) in the 34th minute.
The Zags tied the game in the 57th minute, when Elle Sweeney scored from inside the box.
Junior midfielder Bria Beardsley (Mission Viejo, Calif.) set up the game-winner with a 25-yard pass to Hamilton, who netted a goal inside the far post.
The Pioneers had a 10-8 edge on shots, and the teams both had four corner kicks. Gonzaga committed 16 fouls to only seven by Denver.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lara Campbell (Anchorage, Alaska) made five saves in the contest.
This marked the fifth-straight win for the Pioneers, who also won the Denver Invitational last weekend. The Gonzaga University All-Tournament Team will be announced Monday.
The Pioneers next travel to the Colorado Soccer Classic to face a pair of 2009 NCAA Tournament teams at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo. Denver will face 2009 NCAA Tournament semifinalist UCLA on Sept. 17 and Big 10 power Purdue on Sept. 19.
