Box Score ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Sophomore midfielder Josh Wren (Tulsa, Okla.) scored a goal and had an assist, as the University of Denver men's soccer team knocked off No. 20 Georgetown 3-1 in the TLC Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Invitational at the University of New Mexico on Sunday afternoon.
"The character this group has shown this weekend - coming back three times on Friday and again today - and getting a win against a very good team, I couldn't be more proud today," head coach Bobby Muuss said after beating the ranked Hoyas today and tying No. 16 Portland on Friday. "The way the team responded today after an exhausting double-overtime game Friday, I couldn't ask for more."
With the win and New Mexico's 2-1 loss to Portland, the Pioneers captured the TLC Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Invitational championship.
"We are proud to win this tournament, especially with the high caliber of teams participating," Muuss said. "We are happy with the performance this weekend, but now we need to focus and prepare for a good Oral Roberts team this Friday."
The Pioneers (2-1-1) dominated the Hoyas (2-2-0), outshooting Georgetown 16-6 in the contest, including 8-1 in the second half.
After Georgetown's Ian Christianson gave the Hoyas an early lead on a penalty kick, senior defender Michael Perry(Overland Park, Kan.) tied the game with a penalty kick in the 35th minute.
Just 93 seconds later, sophomore defender Blake Shannon (Houston, Texas) scored what would prove to be the game-winner off a cross from Wren.
In the 70th minute, Wren iced the game with a goal off an assist from sophomore forward Alex Tarnoczi (Castle Rock, Colo.).
Junior midfielder Jarod Stigall (Plano, Texas) was named the invitational's Offensive MVP, and Stigall was joined by sophomore midfielder Mark Weigand (Fort Wayne, Ind.), sophomore defender Drew Beckie (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), sophomore forward Nathan Sackeyfio (Seattle, Wash.) and senior goalkeeper Teale Stone (Tulsa, Okla.) on the All-Tournament Team.
The Pioneers next return to Denver to host Oral Roberts on Sept. 17 and Penn State on Sept. 19 at CIBER Field.
