Box Score BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior forward Kellan Christensen (Layton, Utah) and freshman midfielder Kegan Harkenrider(Fort Wayne, Ind.) both scored, as the University of Denver men's soccer team tied No. 14 California after two overtimes in the Stanford Nike Classic at Edwards Stadium on Friday afternoon.
"I'm proud of the way the guys played against one of the best teams in the country today, but I'm disappointed in the final result," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "We battled through a lot of adversity today, and our team faced the challenges and played well."
Denver (3-2-2) held a one-goal lead with just 54 seconds remaining in regulation, but Cal midfielder Hector Jimenez tied the game with a header that hit the crossbar, landed just across the goal line and bounced back out.
The Pioneers struck first just 7:57 into the game, when sophomore forward Alex Tarnoczi (Castle Rock, Colo.) dribbled up the left side and crossed to Christensen, who buried a shot.
Cal (4-1-2) tied the game in the 26th minute, when Ryan Neil blocked a clear by senior goalkeeper Teale Stone (Tulsa, Okla.) and chipped the ball into an empty net.
Harkenrider put the Pioneers back in front during the 72nd minute, working a give-and-go with junior midfielder Jarod Stigall (Plano, Texas) and drilling a shot from just inside the box.
Stone made a career-high nine saves in the game, as Cal out-shot DU 20-14 and led 8-4 in corner kicks.
The Pioneers conclude the Stanford Nike Classic against Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., on Sunday at 2 p.m. MT.
