Pioneers Fall 1-0 to Stanford

Box Score

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The University of Denver men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Stanford in the Stanford Nike Classic at Cagan Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

"I'm tremendously disappointed in the result today," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "It's not sour grapes, but I truly feel that we were the better team for 75 minutes. Against a good team like Stanford you have to play 90 minutes."

Denver (3-3-2) held a 17-11 advantage in shots and 12-1 in corner kicks, but the Cardinal (4-4-0) got the game's only goal, when Dersu Abolfathi crossed to Adam Jahn, who scored on a volley during the 59th minute.

"I think we learned a lot about our team this weekend," Muuss said. "If we continue to work hard, get better and play the way we did this weekend, we are going to be a difficult opponent the rest of the season."

Senior goalkeeper Teale Stone (Tulsa, Okla.) made four saves in the game, while Stanford goalkeeper Jason Dodson had a pair of saves for his team's fourth-straight win.

The Pioneers begin Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action next weekend, when they take on Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Saturday.
