Pioneers Drop Season-Opener 1-0

Box Score DENVER - The University of Denver men's soccer team (0-1) was defeated by Cal Poly (2-2) 1-0 in the Pioneers' season-opener on Friday night at CIBER Field.

"We were beaten by a better team tonight," said head coach Bobby Muuss. "It was a disappointing game and we are a much better team than we showed. I think we put a lot more pressure on ourselves than we needed. We need to come back on Sunday and rebound."

Cal Poly took the lead in the 87th minute of the hard-fought game, as Chris Gaschen capitalized on a Cortland Forsythe pass to put the Mustangs on top 1-0.

Denver's best scoring opportunity came in the 72nd minute, when sophomore Alex Tarnoczi (Castle Rock, Colo.) rocketed a free kick attempt from 25-yards out, which was stopped by Cal Poly's goalie Patrick McClain, who made seven saves on the night. With the ball still loose in the box, sophomore Josh Wren (Tulsa, Okla.) attempted to poke it into the back of the net, but McClain thwarted the attempt once again.

Senior Teale Stone (Tulsa, Okla.) and sophomore Maté Aguirre (Centennial, Colo.) each played one half in goal for Denver. Stone made one save, while Aguirre made eight saves and allowed one goal.

The Pioneers will be back in action again on Sunday, as they host Houston Baptist at 1 p.m. at CIBER Field.
