Denver Falls to No. 3 New Mexico, 6-0

Box Score

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  - In a tale of two halves, the Pioneers fell to No. 3 New Mexico on Friday night by a count of 6-0 at the UNM Soccer Complex.

Although Denver (3-6-3, 1-2-1 MPSF) had the better of the chances in the first half, a momentary lapse in defending resulted in a penalty kick for the Lobos (10-0-2, 5-0-0 MPSF). UNM senior midfielder Lance Rozeboom had freshman goalkeeper Oliver Brown (Louisville, Ky.) guessing the wrong way on the spot kick, slotting it into the bottom right corner to put the Lobos up 1-0 in the 42nd minute. DU outshot UNM 9-5 in the first half.

The Pioneers struggled to control the ball in the second half, despite only playing three defenders.

UNM junior forward Blake Smith served a corner into the box in the 49th minute. It flicked off a couple heads before being headed in by redshirt freshman forward Carson Baldinger to put the Lobos up a pair of goals.

The Pioneers threw numbers forward for the remainder of the match and conceded the last four goals in the counter attack.

Redshirt freshman midfielder Giovanni Rollie (72'), Smith (76'), junior forward Devon Sandoval (78') and freshman forward James Rogers (87') each scored a goal in the second half.

The Lobos held a 14-12 shot advantage in the match.

Denver and UNLV will square off in Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon for a 2 p.m. MT kickoff. The Pioneers won 3-1 when the teams met on Oct. 9.
