Box Score BOSTON, Mass. - No. 3 Denver scored three times in the final period, but it wasn't enough as No. 7/8 Boston University held on for a 4-3 win over the Pioneers tonight before 5,930 fans at Agganis Arena.
The Terriers led 4-0 in the third period before seniors Luke Salazar (Thornton, Colo.) and John Lee (Moorhead, Minn.) and junior Drew Shore (Denver, Colo.) rallied the Pioneers with consecutive goals. Adam Murray (Anchorage, Alaska) took the loss with 33 saves as Denver falls to 1-1.
Alex Chiasson, Corey Trivino, Matt Nieto and Wade Megan scored and Kieran Millan made 35 saves as Boston University improves to 2-1 with the win.
"Give BU credit for playing hard and capitalizing on our miscues," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "We showed some magic in the third period and I'm pleased with the progress we made this weekend against two quality opponents in Boston College and Boston University."
DU killed off an early BU four-minute power play, but Chiasson beat Murray on a breakaway at 10:54 for the lone goal of the first period. Cason Hohmann started the play near center ice and earned the lone assist on the goal. Denver outshot BU, 17-11, in the period.
The Pioneers' special teams and sloppy play let them down in the second period. Murray misplayed the puck behind his net and Trivino scooped up the puck and beat him 20 seconds into the period to give BU a 2-0 lead. BU scored its second consecutive shorthanded goal when Nieto scored less than a minute later and Megan's power-play goal at 2:58 gave the Terriers a commanding 4-0 lead. BU took control of the shot battle with a 15-7 advantage in the period.
DU mounted its rally when Salazar spoiled Millan's shutout bid with a goal from Joey LaLeggia (Burnaby, British Columbia) at 6:01 of the final stanza.
Lee surprised Millan with a shot from the left circle at 13:09 to make it a two-goal game. Nick Shore (Denver, Colo.) and Paul Phillips (Darien, Ill.) earned assists on the goal.
Gwozdecky pulled Murray at the 16:21 mark to create a 6x5 advantage and Drew Shore scored at 17:39 to make it a one-goal game.
DU outshot BU, 38-37, but was held scoreless on the man-advantage for the second consecutive game, finishing 0-for-6. BU went 1-for-7 on the power play and scored the two shorthanded goals.
The Pioneers host Minnesota State during Homecoming Weekend on Oct. 21-22.
Notes: DU falls to 12-14-2 all-time against Boston University. Drew Shore scored one goal in each game this weekend. LaLeggia tallied his first career point and multi-point effort with a pair of assists.
