Box Score DENVER - Freshman
Juho Olkinuora (Helsinki, Finland) stopped 27 shots in his first career start as No. 2 Denver skated to a 2-2 overtime tie at Michigan Tech Saturday night.
Sophomore Jason Zucker (Las Vegas) and freshman Joey LaLeggia (Burnaby, British Columbia) scored and junior Drew Shore (Denver, Colo.) assisted on both goals as the Pioneers move to 3-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 WCHA. Michigan Tech, who blasted DU 7-2 last night, moved to 5-2-1, 3-2-1 WCHA with a three-point weekend.
"We gave ourselves a chance to win with a much better effort tonight," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "We had a lead in the third, but Tech capitalized on a blown coverage to earn the tie. I thought Olkinuora played extremely well in his first collegiate start."
Milos Gordic staked Tech to a 1-0 lead when he followed his rebound on the power play at 6:29 of the opening period. DU's first shot on goal came from Jarrod Mermis (Alton, Ill.) at 12:46 and Zucker eventually tied the game on the power play with 10 seconds left in the first. Ty Loney (Valencia, Pa.) and Drew Shore earned assists on Zucker's fourth goal of the season. DU owned an 8-7 shot advantage in the period.
LaLeggia's second goal of the weekend came on the power play from Drew Shore and Zucker at 5:34 of the second period. Olkinuora robbed Tech's Patrick McCadden at the goal mouth with a glove save and stopped all six Husky shots in the period.
Brett Olson buried a loose puck at 12:35 of the third period and neither team scored in the extra frame.
Olkinuora, who started in place of injured Adam Murray (Anchorage, Alaska), saved the tie for Denver when he stopped Tanner Kero from the low slot with 23 seconds left in overtime. Olkinuora made four saves in the extra session.
Michigan Tech outshot the Pioneers 29-25 and went 1-for-3 on the power play. DU went 2-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
Denver returns home for a two-game WCHA series against Minnesota Duluth on Nov. 4-5.
Notes: Beau Bennett (Gardena, Calif.) missed his second game with a right wrist injury. Drew Shore extended his point streak to six games with two assists. Drew Shore and Zucker lead DU with 10 points each.
