Box Score DENVER- No. 11 Denver recorded five goals in the second period en route to a 7-3 win over No. 19 Nebraska Omaha Friday night at Magness Arena. Nick Shore(Denver, Colo.) scored twice andJoey LaLeggia (Burnaby, British Columbia) had a career-high, three-point night on a goal and two assists.
Shawn Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta), Jarrod Mermis (Alton, Ill.), Chris Knowlton (Colorado Springs, Colo.), and Drew Shore (Denver, Colo.) had a goal each for the Pioneers, who improve to 5-3-2 overall, 4-2-2 WCHA and 4-1-1 at home.Adam Murray(Anchorage, Alaska) backstopped Denver with 33 saves. Beau Bennett (Gardena, Calif.) and Dustin Jackson (Omaha, Neb.) added two assists each in the victory.
"I thought the biggest factor for us was when we made a couple of important adjustments at the first intermission," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "As a result, we played better offensively, we were able to get our transition game going, and we were able to work deep in-zone offensive plays that created some goal-scoring chances for us."
The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Nick Shore's second goal of the season 56 seconds into the opening frame. Shore picked up a Bennett rebound and beat Faulkner stick-side. Jason Zucker (Las Vegas) also picked up an assist on the play. The Mavericks responded, tying the game at 1-1, on a goal from Josh Archibald.
Ostrow put Denver up 2-1 at 8:01 of the first when he received a pass in the slot from Jackson and fired a shot over Faulkner's left shoulder. Ryan Walters tied the game at 2-2 at 11:31 of the first, capitalizing on a Maverick power-play opportunity.
In a six-goal middle frame, Mermis gave the Pioneers their third lead of the game at 3:47. Zac Larraza (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and John Lee (Moorhead, Minn.) tallied assists on the goal. The Pioneers went up 4-2, two minutes later, as Knowlton tipped in a David Makowski (Wildwood, Mo.) shot from the point. Terry Broadhurst brought the Mavericks within one at 8:36 of the second, but Denver responded with LaLeggia's fifth goal of the season at 12:10 to make it 5-3. Drew Shore and Daniel Doremus (Aspen, Colo.) had the assists.
Drew Shore gave the Pioneers a 6-3 lead at 15:54 of the second and LaLeggia added an assist on the goal. Nick Shore scored Denver's fifth of the period on a 5-on-3 advantage for the Pioneers, making it 7-3. Bennett and LaLeggia tallied assists on the power-play goal.
Nebraska Omaha outshot Denver, 36-30, and went 1-for-4 on the power play. Denver went 2-for-5 with the man-advantage.
