Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) scored two goals and junior co-captain
Drew Shore (Denver, Colo.) netted the game-winner as No. 13 Denver rallied for a 3-2 win over Bemidji State in WCHA action Friday night at Sanford Center.
Freshman Juho Olkinuora (Helsinki, Finland) earned the win with 21 saves as DU ends a two-game losing streak and improves to 7-5-3, 5-3-3 WCHA.
Shea Walters and Jamie MacQueen scored and Dan Bakala made 25 saves as Bemidji State falls to 6-9-3, 5-7-3.
Trailing 2-1 in the third, Zucker tied the game at 12:49 when he scooped up an unexpected Bakala turnover from behind the net.
Drew Shore netted the game-winner at 15:48 from the top of the left circle from senior Luke Salazar (Thornton, Colo.) and sophomore defenseman David Makowski (Wildwood, Mo.).
After a scoreless first period, Zucker staked DU to a short-lived 1-0 lead with a quick wrister from the left circle at 3:16 of the second period. Drew Shore and Ty Loney (Valencia, Pa.) earned assists on the goal.
Walters answered for Bemidji State at 7:58 of the middle stanza and MacQueen scored from the high slot just after a Makowski tripping penalty expired to give the Beavers a 2-1 lead at 16:13.
DU outshot Bemidji State 28-23 and both teams went 0-for-2 on the power play in a game that had just four penalties.
The Pioneers and Beavers play game two of the series tomorrow night at 6:07 p.m. MT.
Notes: Drew Shore and Zucker extended their point streaks to seven games. Gwozdecky announced earlier today that sophomore forward Beau Bennett (Gardena, Calif.) is out at least 6-8 weeks after successful wrist surgery on Thursday.
