Denver Outlasts Western Michigan at Midwest Regional

Box Score GREEN BAY, Wis. - WCHA Rookie of the Year Jason Zucker (Las Vegas) scored the game-winning goal at 11:14 of double overtime as No. 2 seed Denver rallied from a late two-goal deficit for a dramatic 3-2 victory against No. 3 seed Western Michigan today at the NCAA Midwest Regional at Green Bay's Resch Center.

Denver improves to 25-11-5 with its first NCAA Tournament win since 2005 and advances to the Midwest Regional championship against North Dakota tomorrow. Western Michigan falls to 19-13-10 in its first NCAA Tournament game since 1996.

Captain Kyle Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta) and Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) also scored and freshman Sam Brittain (Calgary, Alberta) stopped 30 shots in his NCAA Tournament debut. Zucker added two assists for a three-point game.

Derek Roehl and Trevor Elias scored and Jerry Kuhn stopped 35 shots for Western Michigan.

Zucker rebounded his own blocked shot and rifled the game-winner past Kuhn high to the stick side. Luke Salazar (Thornton, Colo.) and Donovan earned assists on the goal.

Roehl, son of former Pioneer Craig Roehl, tallied the first goal of the game at 13:17 of the second period when DU's David Makowski (Wildwood, Mo.) and Brittain miscommunicated on a loose puck in the low slot. Roehl buried the puck with assists credited to Ben Warda and Kyle O'Kane.

Elias made it 2-0 with a goal from Greg Squires at 3:32 of the third period.

Western Michigan controlled the game until Ostrow cut the lead to 2-1 with a power-play goal from Zucker and Makowski at 15:31 of the third period.

Donovan sent the game to overtime when he snapped in a laser past Kuhn at 17:24. Drew Shore (Denver) also assisted on the big goal for Denver.

The Pioneers won the shot battle 38-32. Denver went 1-for-4 on the power play and held Western Michigan scoreless in six man-advantage opportunities.

Puck drop for the Midwest Regional final is set for 3:34 p.m. MT.

Notes: DU improved to 27-17 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. The Pioneers are 1-2 against North Dakota this season and 4-1 against the Fighting Sioux in the NCAA Tournament.
