Alabama-Huntsville Shocks Denver, 3-2

Box Score

DENVER - Mac Roy scored two goals, including the game-winner in the third period, and goaltender Clarke Saunders made 41 saves as Alabama-Huntsville shocked No. 10/11 Denver, 3-2, Friday night at Magness Arena.

The Chargers win for just the second time this season and improve to 2-21-1. Denver, who received goals from junior Shawn Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta) and freshman Ty Loney (Valencia, Pa.), falls to 10-8-3.

"We killed ourselves with our puck management in our zone," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "Our turnovers from below our goal line led to their first and third goals. This loss stings and our margin of error gets smaller and smaller from this point forward. Our team must have better execution and effort tomorrow night."

DU jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Ostrow backhanded a deflection near the crease at 8:13 and Loney gave DU a 2-0 lead when he slid his own rebound past Saunders on the power play at 12:44. Nick Shore (Denver, Colo.) and Scott Mayfield (St. Louis, Mo.) earned the power-play assists.

Alabama-Huntsville began its comeback moments later when Justin Cseter beat Juho Olkinuora (Helsinki, Finland) unassisted at 16:18 to cut DU's lead to 2-1 after the first period.

Roy tied the score at 2-2 by finishing a power play at 16:49 of the second period and tallied the game-winning goal at 17:19 of the final stanza.

The Crimson and Gold outshot Alabama-Huntsville, 43-20, and went 1-for-6 on the power play. The Chargers were 1-for-2 on the power play.

Notes: DU is 22nd in the latest PairWise Rankings. The Pioneers are 4-1 all-time against the Chargers. Freshman Larkin Jacobson (Sioux City, Iowa) made his collegiate debut for the Pioneers. Alabama-Huntsville assistant coach Gavin Morgan played at DU from 1995-99.
