Box Score DENVER - The University of Denver men's soccer team fell to No. 8 New Mexico by a count of 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
"I don't think we played with confidence today," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "Our big thing going into the game was protecting the ball and keeping the ball, but they executed their game plan better than we did. We lost a bit of composure and turned the ball over too many times."
Senior forward Josh Wren (Tulsa, Okla.) nearly opened the scoring in the 26th minute, but his 20-yard attempt hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play. New Mexico's Ben McKendry got around DU keeper Oliver Brown (Louisville, Ky.) in the 39th minute, but sent his empty-net six-yard shot over the bar, and the two teams went into the intermission scoreless.
New Mexico got its first goal in the 50th minute on James Rogers' fifth of the season. Blake Smith started the scoring chance, changing fields to an open Rogers, who beat Brown to give the Lobos the lead.
Devon Sandoval scored his second goal against the Pioneers this season in the 72nd minute, this one on assists from Rogers and Smith. After a pair of connecting passes in the box, Sandoval picked up the bouncing ball and fired a strike into the right side of the net.
The Pioneers continue their four-match homestand next Friday when San Jose State visits CIBER Field in a cross-divisional MPSF match. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. MT.
