Denver Hosts San Jose State and Seattle This Weekend

DENVER - The University of Denver men's soccer program hosts the final two matches of its four-match homestand this weekend, as the Pioneers take on San Jose State on Friday at 7:30 p.m. MT, before battling Seattle on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. MT. Both matches will be played following DU women's soccer matches at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.

One ticket gets fans into both the men's and women's matches on that day. Individual game tickets during the 2012 season are $10 for a reserved seatback and $5 for general admission, and may be purchased by phone at 303-871-2336, online at DenverPioneers.com or in person at the Ritchie Center Box Office. HEAD COACH BOBBY MUUSS

DU men's soccer head coach Bobby Muuss is 13 matches into his sixth season at DU. The Pioneers are 45-43-20, under the East Islip, N.Y., native, and 26-17-9 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Muuss is a two-time MPSF Coach of the Year (2007, 2008), and the Pioneers have won two MPSF regular season titles (2008, 2010) during his tenure.

THE 2012 PIONEERS (6-4-3, 1-3-1 MPSF)

Junior midfielder Josh Wren (Tulsa, Okla.) leads the Pioneers with 14 points, on six goals and two assists. Classmate Zach Bolden (Denver, Colo.) tops the team with five assists. The Denver native also doubled his goal tally to four last weekend. Sophomore Brian Hoyt (Tempe, Ariz.) has nine points through Denver's first 13 matches, on four goals and an assist. Seven of Denver's 13 matches this season have gone to extra time. The Pioneers have outscored their opponents 26-16, including 12-3 in the first half.

SCOUTING SAN JOSE STATE (2012: 6-5-1, 3-1-1 MPSF)

Steven Sanchez leads the Spartans with 18 points on eight goals and two assists through SJSU's first 12 matches. Jonathan Salceda is the other Spartan in double figures with 13 points on four goals on five assists. Emmanuel Espinosa has taken over goalkeeper duties for the last three matches for SJSU, going 2-1-0 in that span with one shutout. San Jose State has been outscored 22-21 this year. Head coach Gary St. Clair is in his 23rd season with San Jose State, holding a 211-194-37 record during his tenure.

SCOUTING SEATTLE  (2012: 2-9-1, 0-4-1 MPSF)

Seattle has been outscored 33-16, including 17-7 in the second half. The Riverhawks have only required extra time in one match this season. Haddadi Hamza and Brady Ballew lead the Riverhawks in points with eight a piece, both on three goals and two assists. Miguel Gonzalez has also found the back of the net three times this season. Jake Feener has started eight of the 13 matches in goal for Seattle, keeping two clean sheets in those eight matches. Head coach Peter Fewing is in his 19th overall season with Seattle, but his first year in his second stint with the Redhawks. Fewing led Seattle to a 220-125-26 record during his first stint, from 1988-2005. 

LAST TIME OUT

The Pioneers opened last weekend with a 6-0 win against Houston Baptist, the largest margin of victory for the program since Denver defeated Birmingham Southern 7-0 on Sept. 9, 2007, in Muuss' third career match with the Pioneers. On Sunday, Denver fell to No. 8 New Mexico 2-0.
