[RV/-] Denver Travels to [9/3] Virginia for Sunday Evening Clash

The Pioneers will make their third trip to the east coast in as many weeks on Sunday

DENVER – The [RV/-] University of Denver men's soccer team heads to the east coast for the third and final time in October and in the regular season when the Pioneers travel to [9/3] Virginia on Sunday. The match is set for a 5 p.m. ET/3 p.m. MT kickoff and will be streamed on ACC Network Xtra.

DENVER VS. VIRGINIA SERIES HISTORY:
Sunday marked the fourth meeting between the two programs with all four taking place in Charlottesville. Denver holds a 2-1 series lead in the match-ups that date back to 2018. The Cavaliers won the first meeting 3-0 in 2018, but Denver has since won 2-1 in extra time in 2021 and 1-0 off a Lukas Fisher penalty in 2022.

LAST TIME OUT:
Denver didn't allow a shot on goal on the road at Pittsburgh on Tuesday in the Pioneers first draw of the season, a scoreless 90 minutes on the east coast. FULL RECAP 

TOP-10 SINCE 2015

  • Denver is 131-45-34 since the start of the 2015 season.
  • That record is good for sixth in the country in wins during that span, behind Wake Forest (158), Indiana (150), Clemson (147), Georgetown (140), Stanford (137).
  • Of the 27 teams that had at least 100 wins in that span entering the year, Denver has the seventh-fewest losses at 45.
  • Six of Denver's opponents are among the 27 that began the year with 100 wins since the start of the 2015 season.
  • Virginia is 20th on the list at 114-52-37.

LIMITING CHANCES

  • Denver has held opponents to two shots or less 13 times in its DI era.
  • The Pioneers have held opponents without a shot on goal 24 times in their Division I history, including three times during the 2023 season, once in 2024 and at Pittsburgh on October 14 this season.
  • Denver's defense enters Sunday evening's match on a 252 minute shutout streak, having allowed just 10 shots on goal in the last four matches.
  • Denver held St. Thomas to just one shot, and no shots on goal in the match in Minnesota on Oct. 26, 2024.
  • The Pioneers held [14] Indiana to just two shots on goal in the NCAA Round of 16 win on November 30, both of which came in the final 15.

RECORD BOOK WATCH

  • Career Shutouts: Isaac Nehme broke the career shutouts record in the Pios 2024 NCAA Second Round win with his 27th, and now has 32.
  • Career Goalkeeper Wins: Isaac Nehme broke the career goalkeeper wins record on August 31 vs. SIUE (2-1), capturing his 43rd victory to pass Nick Gardner (2014-18). Nehme now has 48.
  • Career Saves: Isaac Nehme has 170 career saves to sit fourth in Denver's DI history in career saves. Nehme is 24 saves behind Parker Jarvis (1999-01) for third on the list.
  • Career Matches Started: Isaac Nehme and Trevor Wright enter Sunday having made 77 career starts. With a start Sunday, the Pioneer duo will sit together in a tie for third in program history, five behind the record held by Scott DeVoss (2015-18 | 83).
  • Career Matches Played: With his next appearance, Dylan Akau will tie Alex Underwood (2014-17) for 7th in program history at 80. Wright and Nehme's next appearance will tie them with Chandler Crosswait (2012-16) and Karsten Hanlim (2013-16) for 11th at 78 apps.

DENVER AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS

  • Denver is 27-46-16 in its Division I history against the USC Top-25, going 13-13-3 at home, 13-27-10 on the road and 1-6-4 neutral.
  • Under Jamie Franks, Denver is 18-20-9 against ranked opponents, including 9-5-2 at home, 9-13-5 on the road and 0-2-2 at a neutral site.
  • The Pioneers are 12-8-4 against teams receiving votes, including 7-5-2 at home, 4-3-2 on the road and 1-0-0 at a neutral site.
  • Denver is 4-13-0 against teams ranked in the top-5 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, including 2-8 in true road games.
  • The Pioneers only road win against a top-5 team prior to last season's 1-0 win at No. 5 Stanford came on December 2, 2016 when the fourth-ranked Pioneers beat No. 3 Clemson 1-0 in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
  • Denver's last win against a top-5 team prior to last season came in a 3-2 win against No. 3 Washington on August 30, 2018 at DU.
  • Denver's first win over a ranked opponent in 2025 came at No. 14 Georgetown on October 7 (GT 1-2 DEN).

DENVER AND THE NEW POWER 4

  • Five matches on Denver's season-opening six-match road swing were against the Power-4 in 2024, with the other coming against the deep BIG EAST Conference (Creighton).
  • Denver's most wins against the power conferences came in 2016 when the Pios won four against members of the premier conferences. DU has had multiple wins in three seasons, winning three times against the P4 in 2024 and twice in 2022. 
  • The Pioneers 2-1 win over Cal and 1-0 win over No. 5 Stanford in the season opening weekend last season were Denver's ninth and 10th P4 wins, and its 11th under Franks came against [14] Indiana in the NCAA Round of 16.
  • In the second year of the new Power-4, the Pios will battle four P4 teams in the regular season in 2025. 
  • Denver enters the match 1-1-1 against the P4 this season.

2025 REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE

  • Jamie Franks has put his program up against the best once again with his 2025 schedule that was announced in July.
  • Denver's opponents combined for a 173-99-73 record a year ago, and had an RPI average of 54.5.
  • The Pios play 10 NCAA Tournament teams from last season, including six that got to at least the third round and a pair of NCAA Quarterfinal opponents in Pittsburgh and UMass.
  • Nine of Denver's opponents appeared in the United Soccer Coaches' Preseason Poll.
  • In the regular season, Denver will 14 opponents that finished in last season's RPI in the Top-100 (three more than last season), eight from the Top-50 (one less than 2024) and five in the Top-20 (one more). 
  • Denver's 2025 results against teams that finished 2024 in the top-100.
