Denver Edges Seattle 1-0 on Shannon's Goal

Box Score

DENVER - Senior defender Blake Shannon's (Houston, Texas) goal gave the University of Denver men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Seattle on Sunday afternoon at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action.

"I don't think it was as clean a performance as I'd like to have had, but the guys got through it," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "Right now, we're excited to get the result. It wasn't a great performance, but it was a great win."

Denver (8-4-3, 3-3-1 MPSF) found the game's only goal on Shannon's 71st minute strike, assisted by senior midfielder Josh Wren (Tulsa, Okla.) and junior midfielder Zach Bolden (Denver, Colo.). Bolden created the opportunity by playing a ball into the penalty area. Wren got a touch inside the six yard box before Shannon placed the ball in the back of the net, beating the Seattle (2-11-1, 0-6-1 MPSF) goalkeeper from point-blank range.

The Pioneers held a 23-4 advantage on shots and led 10-2 in corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Oliver Brown (Louisville, Ky.) earned his third shutout of the season, recording just one save in the match.

Denver returns to the road next Friday, traveling to Cal State Bakersfield for an 8 p.m. MT kickoff.
