Denver Remains Undefeated after 5-2 Win over Michigan Tech

Box Score

DENVER - Joey LaLeggia (Burnaby, B.C.), David Makowski (Wildwood, Mo.) and Shawn Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta) had a goal and an assist each, helping the No. 5 University of Denver Pioneers remain undefeated with a 5-2 victory over Michigan Tech in front of 5,795 fans at Magness Arena on Saturday night.

Quentin Shore (Denver, Colo.) and Daniel Doremus (Aspen, Colo.) also scored for the Pioneers (4-0-0, 2-0-0 WCHA), while goaltender Adam Murray (Anchorage, Alaska) made 36 saves.

Denver has scored five goals in each of its first four games, marking just the fourth time DU has done so and the first time since 1987-88.

"We're getting good balance," head coach George Gwozdecky said. "Adam Murray's  teammates didn't make it easy on him tonight. He earned that win. I was pleased with the way we started the game. I thought we dictated the pace early, kind of like they did to us last night. We had some avoidable penalties in the second period, and we never really got back into sync after that. They had their chances, but our penalty kill, including Adam Murray, did an outstanding job tonight."

Denver killed off five Michigan Tech power plays, including a 5-on-3 in the second period, and DU scored on 1-of-6 power plays.

Skating four-on-four at the 12:14 mark in the first period, the Pioneers got on the board first. Matt Tabrum (Colorado Springs, Colo.) passed to Scott Mayfield (St. Louis, Mo.), whose wrister hit the post. But Quentin Shore was in front of the net to knock the rebound past goaltender Pheonix Copley (23 saves).

The Huskies (2-4-0, 1-3-0 WCHA) responded quickly, when Dennis Rix scored a short-handed goal at the 13:52 mark with assists from Chad Pietila and Bradley Stebner.

Denver regained the lead on a Makowski goal at 15:09 in the first with LaLeggia and Nick Shore (Denver, Colo.) earning assists.

At 2:09 in the second period, just after the Huskies killed a penalty, LaLeggia scored on a wrister from the blueline off a pass from Nick Shore.

A goal by Ostrow at the 6:04 mark in the third period gave the Pioneers a three-goal lead. Senior defenseman Paul Phillips (Darien, Ill.) and sophomore winger Zac Larraza (Scottsdale, Ariz.) earned assists on the play.

At the 9:12 mark in the third, Makowski set up Ostrow, who sent a pass to Doremus in the left circle for a goal on the one-timer.

Michigan Tech got one back on Rix's second goal off assists from Jimmy Davis and Malcolm Gould.

The Huskies outshot the Pioneers 38-28 in the contest, and DU went 1-for-4 and MT was 1-for-6 on a man advantage.

The Pioneers remain at home next weekend, hosting St. Cloud State at Magness Arena on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 2-3.

Denver hockey tickets can be purchased online at www.DenverPioneers.com, in person at the Ritchie Center North Box Office or by calling (303) 871-2336.

Notes: The Pioneers have scored at least one goal in 11-straight periods, the longest such streak since Nov. 13-Dec. 3, 2010, when DU scored in 17-straight periods. The only period that Denver failed to score was the first of the season...two of Denver's goals tonight came from blueliners, who have accounted for 40 percent (8-of-20) of DU's goals this season...the Pioneers have scored five goals in each of their four games, the first time DU has accomplished that feat since 1987-88, when they did it in each of the first five games...Denver is 4-0-0 for the first time since 2008-09 and the 11th time in the team's 63-year history.
