Box Score RUSTON, La. - Sophomore forward Royce O'Neale (Killeen, Texas) recorded 18 points and seven rebounds, but the University of Denver men's basketball team fell 68-60 to Louisiana Tech on Saturday night at Thomas Assembly Center.
"We're playing better, but we played a good team on the road tonight," head coach Joe Scott said. "We need to learn how to win when everything isn't working perfectly. That's how the road is. We didn't do enough of that tonight, and Louisiana Tech took advantage. Give them credit for hitting big shots when they needed them."
Junior forward Chris Udofia (Irving, Texas) added 10 points and six rebounds for the Pioneers (4-7, 0-1 WAC), who shot 46.9 percent (23-of-49) from the field in the game but struggled with their shots early and turned the ball over 17 times. Sophomore guard Cam Griffin (San Antonio, Texas) registered nine points, six rebounds and three assists.
The Bulldogs (10-3, 1-0) outscored DU 13-6 off turnovers and 17-6 on second-chance points. Denver hit just 4-of-19 (21.1 percent) from three-point range.
Sophomore guard Brett Olson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), who had three steals but was challenged with foul trouble throughout the game, hit a three-pointer with 6:49 remaining in the second half to cut the deficit to 58-52, but the Bulldogs answered with a free throw followed by an alley-oop dunk by Cordarius Johnson and a tip-in by Michale Kyser to give La Tech its biggest lead of the night at 11 points.
Denver jumped to an early 4-2 lead, but the Pioneers turned the ball over 11 times, and the Bulldogs took a 32-26 lead into halftime.
Raheem Appleby led the Bulldogs with 12 points, and Kenneth Smith and Kenyon McNeail added 10 points each.
The Pioneers complete their weekend road trip at Texas-Arlington on Monday at 1 p.m. MT
