Brittain Stars in 3-0 Win at Wisconsin

Box Score MADISON, Wis. - Sam Brittain (Calgary, Alberta) stopped 28 shots for his second career shutout as No. 10 Denver blanked Wisconsin 3-0 in WCHA action Friday night at the Kohl Center.

Luke Salazar (Thornton, Colo.), Jason Zucker (Las Vegas) and Nick Shore (Denver, Colo.) each scored as Denver improves to 18-9-4, 13-6-4 WCHA with its third consecutive win. Wisconsin falls to 12-15-2, 7-14-2.

"We didn't play a great game, but Sam Brittain made some big saves and we scored some timely goals," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "There are some areas we need to improve upon tomorrow night."

Salazar scooped up a Mark Zengerle turnover and beat Josh Rumpel (22 saves) at 8:22 of the second to give DU a 1-0 lead.

Zucker buried a Chris Knowlton (Colorado Springs) feed from between the circles at 7:46 of the third period to give DU a 2-0 lead.

Nick Shore iced the win with a 130-foot backhanded goal into an empty net with 31 seconds left in the game. John Lee (Moorhead, Minn.), who was +3 on the night, and Shawn Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta) earned assists on the goal.

Brittain stopped seven shots in the first period, 11 in the second and 10 more in the third to get the shutout.

DU sparkled on the penalty kill with a 4-for-4 effort, which included only three Wisconsin shots on goal.

Wisconsin outshot the Pioneers 28-27 and DU went 0-for-1 on the power play.

Game two of the series is tomorrow night at 6:07 p.m. MT.

Notes: DU improves to 14-3-3 all-time against the Badgers at the Kohl Center. The Pioneers are third in the WCHA with 30 points.
