Denver Rolls Arizona, 6-1

TUSCON, Ariz. - The University of Denver defeated Arizona 6-1 in men's tennis action Sunday afternoon at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The Crimson and Gold improve to 3-6, while the Wildcats fall to 3-5.

After Arizona clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 2, the Pioneers posted six straight singles wins to earn a two-match split on their trip to Arizona.

"Doubles did not start great and we had a couple guys not quite ready to go, but we did a fantastic job in the singles," DU head coach Danny Westerman said. "We learned a lot from yesterday's loss and we were willing to play a lot tougher today."

Jens Vorkefeld (Ostercappeln, Germany) beat Sumeet Shinde 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Fabio Biasion (Velbert, Germany) beat Carlos Bermudez 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Max Krammer (Perchtoldsdorf, Austria) defeated Mario Urquidi 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to give DU a 3-1 lead.

Denver's Yannick Weihs (Guntramsdorf, Austria) clinched the win with a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 2 singles. Enej Bonin (Koper, Slovenia) beat Andre Vidaller by retirement at No. 1 and Alex Clinkenbeard (Loveland, Colo.) made the final score 6-1 with a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.

The Pioneers host BYU on Friday, Feb. 24. First serve at Pinehurst Country Club is set for 7 p.m. MT.
