Box Score DENVER – University of Denver senior forward Chris Udofia’s (Irving, Texas) double-double was not enough to bring the Pioneers past Stanford, as DU dropped its home opener 66-57 at Magness Arena on Sunday afternoon.
“We had a big improvement from game one to game two, as far as our competitiveness. We grew up, and that showed up in the way we competed and played,” said head coach Joe Scott. “Stanford is a good team, and you’ve got to play well for 40 minutes against them. We have to learn what playing 40 minutes means. We needed to take care of the ball and make foul shots, and we didn’t do that today.”
Udofia racked up team-highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, while also blocking five shots for the Pioneers (0-2). Udofia shot 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the field and drained his only two three-point shots. Junior guard Cam Griffin (San Antonio, Texas) added eight points and four rebounds for Denver.
Making his first collegiate start, freshman forward Drick Bernstine (Aurora, Colo.) hit his first two shots and ended the game with six points, five rebounds and four assists.
With the loss to the Cardinal (3-1), Denver’s home winning streak snapped at 13 games, which dated back to Nov. 21, 2012.
DU kept the game close for most of the game, trailing 41-39 with 10:08 left in the game. Stanford went on a 16-5 run over the following six minutes to bring the score to 57-44.
The Crimson and Gold shot 41.9 percent (18-of-43) from the field, 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from three-point range and 60.0 percent (15-of-25). Stanford hit 44.4 percent (20-of-45) from the floor and scored 20 points off Denver’s 18 turnovers.
The Pioneers take on Harvard in the First Round of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout on Nov. 28 at 10 p.m. MT. The game will be held in Anchorage, Alaska, and televised on CBS Sports Network.
