DENVER - University of Denver women's lacrosse freshman midfielder Rachael McKinnon (Brooklin, Ontario) was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Rookie of the Week, the MPSF announced on Monday.
McKinnon had six points in a pair of MPSF road wins last week at San Diego State and the University of Southern California. She scored two goals with an assist and a ground ball in a 13-9 victory at San Diego State, and followed that up with her first hat trick a 16-11 win at USC.
"Rachael had the opportunity to step up because of an injury we had on Friday ," head coach Liza Kelly said. “On Sunday she stepped into the same role and played with a lot of confidence. She is somebody we have been looking for and prodding to step up and I think she is now coming into her own and playing more like a sophomore than a freshman."
This marks the first week a Pioneer has claimed MPSF Rookie of the Week.
The MPSF expanded weekly honors to include offensive, defensive and rookie of the week for this season. UC Davis senior attacker Elizabeth Datino was MPSF Offensive Player of the Week and Stanford junior goalkeeper Lyndsey Munoz was named MPSF Defensive Player of the Week.
20th-ranked Denver returns home for a pair of MPSF games this weekend. The Pioneers play Friday against No. 10/20 Stanford at 7 p.m. MT. and Sunday against UC Davis at 2:30 p.m. MT., both games will be played at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
