Pioneers Fall 2-0 to No. 21 Charlotte

Box Score

DENVER – The University of Denver men’s soccer team fell 2-0 to No. 21 Charlotte at CIBER Field on Friday night.

The Pioneers (0-1-0) and 49ers (1-0-0) played the first half to a scoreless tie, as DU out-shot Charlotte 5-3 before the break.

However, Charlotte’s Giuseppe Gentile scored a pair of second-half goals to lift the 49ers. In the 60th minute, Gentile took a pass from the right side of the field and beat Denver goalkeeper Oliver Brown (Louisville, Ky.) one-on-one inside the box. Gentile sealed the win in the 89th minute, when he beat a diving Brown to a pass inside the left side of the box and flicked a shot inside the far post.

“We did a good job in the first half,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “Charlotte imposed their game on us. We have two contrasting styles, and they did a better job of playing their style.”

In the game, the Crimson and Gold out-shot Charlotte 11-10, but 49er goalkeeper Klay Davis recorded the shutout. Brown made five saves in the contest.

Brian Hoyt (Denver, Colo.) took three shots, while Cole Chapleski (Broomfield, Colo.) and Jordan Schweitzer (Everett, Wash.) had two each.

“We have a good team and will generate a lot of chances in our games,” Muuss said. “We will get better each day. We are already this weekend than we were last week against New Mexico.”

Denver returns to action against the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners at CIBER Field on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. MT.
