Seniors Lead Pioneers Past Roadrunners 4-0

Box Score

DENVER – Four University of Denver men’s soccer seniors scored, propelling the Pioneers to a 4-0 victory over Cal State Bakersfield at CIBER Field on Sunday night.

“We got four goals from four seniors tonight,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “We challenged them after the loss on Friday. We need our seniors to step up.”

Senior Blair Jeralds (Clemmons, N.C.) gave the Pioneers (1-1-0) their first goal of the season in the 19th minute off a corner kick by senior Zach Bolden (Denver, Colo.) and a header from sophomore Jordan Schweitzer (Everett, Wash.).

Denver added to it in the 22nd minute, when Bolden took a pass from junior Brian Hoyt (Tempe, Ariz.), beat goalkeeper Anthony Perez inside the box and chipped in a shot from 15 yards.

After Bolden was fouled inside the box in the 51st minute, senior Cole Chapleski (Broomfield, Colo.) converted a penalty kick to give DU a three-goal lead.

Senior Jack Henderson (Denver, Colo.) sealed the game in the 83rd minute with his first-career goal off an assist from senior Anees Abdulgasem (Denver, Colo.).

“We talked about it this weekend. We will score goals and we will play good defensively,” Muuss said. “If we do those two things than we’ll be fine.”

Goalkeeper Oliver Brown (Louisville, Ky.) made five saves for his seventh career shutout.

“Oliver Brown bounced back and had a good game,” Muuss said. “After letting up two goals on Friday, he got a shutout tonight and made five saves. One of our goals is that we don’t want him to have to do too much.”

The Pioneers dominated the shot count at 21-7 over the Roadrunners (0-1-0).

The Crimson and Gold head on their first road trip of the season, visiting George Mason on Friday, Sept. 6 at 5 p.m. MT, and American on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 11 a.m. MT.
