DU Comes Back to Defeat Cal Poly, 2-1

Box Score

DENVER – Led by senior Zach Bolden's (Denver, Colo.) game-winner in the 69th minute, the University of Denver men's soccer team came from behind to defeat the visiting Cal Poly Mustangs 2-1 on Sunday night at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.

"It was a great team win again," said DU men's soccer head coach Bobby Muuss. "We had a game plan in place, and everybody that got on the field today followed the game plan and worked extremely hard to come back from a goal against a very good Cal Poly team that’s going to win a lot of games this year. I think this is a big step in the right direction for the team.”

The Pioneers improve to 4-3-2 overall with the win, while the Mustangs drop to 7-3-0. It was the fourth straight game in which the Pioneers scored at least a point.

With the score deadlocked at 1-1, redshirt freshman defender Reagan Dunk (Dallas, Texas) slipped a pass through three Cal Poly defenders, finding Bolden, who ran across the face of the goal,  slotting a shot past the diving Mustangs' goalkeeper into the bottom-right corner of the net to give the Pioneers a 2-1 advantage in the 69th minute.

The Mustangs struck first in the 29th minute when Chase Minter dropped a pass to John Chronopoulos, who beat his defender slipping the ball into the lower corner of the net for the score.

Moments into the second half, the Pioneers siezed an opportunty to even the score as sophomore midfielder Jordan Schweitzer (Everett, Wash.) attempted a header off a cross. Within second of corralling the deflection off the header, senior defender Theodor Remman (Hosle, Norway) was taken down by the Mustangs' goalkeeper, who was whistle for the foul.

Awarded a penalty kick, Pioneers senior midfielder Cole Chapleski (Broomfield, Colo.) drilled the ball in the high center of the goal for the equalizer in the 54th minute of play.

The Pioneers nearly tripled the Mustangs in the shot tally, 17-6, which included a 9-2 margin in the opening 45 minutes.

Junior goalkeeper Oliver Brown (Louisville, Ky.), who climbed to 4-3-2 in the win, had a pair of saves. Cal Poly goalkeeper Wade Hamilton (7-3-0) was credited with five in the loss.

DU will take to the road to begin The Summit League conference action at Fort Wayne (0-8-1, 0-1-0 Summit) at 5:30 p.m. MT on Friday, Oct. 4.
