Moraga, Calif. - The University of Denver men's basketball team dropped its first road game of the year 78-62 Thursday evening in Moraga, Calif against the St. Mary's Gaels.
The Pioneers were led by senior guard Cam Griffin (San Antonio, Texas) who scored a career-high 19 points breaking his previous high of 15 points, which he had previously done three times with the last being vs. Western Illinois on February 20, 2014. Griffin also added eight rebounds and five assists. Freshman Daniel Amigo (El Paso, Texas) scored 10 points in his first collegiate road game.
The Crimson and Gold (1-1) hung tough in one of the toughest venues in the country as the Gaels (3-0) extended their home non-conference winning streak to 31 games.
Senior Brett Olson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) added 10 points. Jake Pemberton (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) playing in his second collegiate game scored eight points in 13 minutes.
Denver couldn't overcome the torrid shooting of the Gaels who shot 64.6 percent (31-for-48), while the Pioneers shot 43.6 percent (24-for-55).
The Crimson and Gold were led by Griffin in the first half as he scored 11 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. DU trailed at halftime 34-26.
The Pioneers shot 33.3 percent (9-of-27) from the floor while St. Mary's hit for 56.5 percent (13-of-23) in the first half. Denver shot 10.0 percent from behind the arc (1-of-10) and the Gaels shot 20.0 percent (1-of-5).
Marcus Byrd (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) came off the bench to contribute seven points and two assists.
Denver had 19 assists on 24 made baskets.
Freshman guard Cam Delaney (Harker Heights, Texas) made his collegiate debut in the first half playing two minutes. Duke Douglas (New Orleans, La) scored four first half points, which were his first points in his career and finished the game with six points on 2-for-2 shooting from the field and 2-for2 from the free throw line.
Denver returns home to take on Coppin State at Magness Arena on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 1 p.m. MT in a game that can be seen on Pioneer Vision and heard on Mile High Sports Radio 94.1 FM.
