DENVER - The University of Denver men's basketball team defeated the Coppin State Eagles 80-54 Sunday afternoon at Magness Arena.



The Pioneers were led by senior guard Cam Griffin(San Antonio, Texas) who recorded a double-double, scoring 13 points and adding 10 rebounds. Griffin also had five assists, two steals and one block. Senior Brett Olson(Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored 14 points, dished out six assists and grabbed five rebounds. Freshman Daniel Amigo(El Paso, Texas) scored 12 points giving him back-to-back double digit scoring games.



"I think we played hard for 40 minutes today," head coach Joe Scott said. "As a team we played a good game defensively, which is something we have been stressing in practice. I think Cam Griffin has been competing at a high level. He has consistently been doing good things throughout the first three games of the year for our team."



The Crimson and Gold (2-1) leading 37-30 with 15:52 in the second half used a 10-2 run to open up a 15-point lead 47-32 over the Eagles (0-4) and never looked back scoring 46 second-half points.



Marcus Byrd(Highlands Ranch, Colo.) came off the bench to score 10 points going (4-for-6 ) from the field and (2-for-2) from behind the arc. Bryant Rucker (Frisco, Texas) rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Pioneers adding 10 points. Nate Engesser (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished the game with eight points and two rebounds.



Denver finished the game shooting 57.1 percent (28-for-49), while the Eagles shot 39.6 percent (21-for-53). The Pioneers shot 45 percent from behind the 3-point line (9-for-20)



The Crimson and Gold had a balanced first half with four players scoring six points or more: Engesser (8), Amigo (7), Byrd (7), and Griffin (6).



Denver led at half 34-23 and had 12 assists on 14 made field goals and outscored Coppin State 16-8 in the paint.



The Pioneers shot 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the floor while Coppin State hit for 35.7 percent (10-of-28) in the first half. Denver shot 50.0 percent from behind the arc (5-of-10) and the Eagles shot 33.3 percent (3-of-9).



Freshman forward/center Christian Mackey (Kirtland, New Mexico) made his collegiate debut in the second half scoring two points and grabbing a rebound in two minutes. Josiah Dunn (Littleton, Colo.) saw his first action of the season against the Eagles.



Notes: Joe Scott coached teams moved to 18-0 when scoring 80 or more points. The five pioneers in double figures was the first time since Jan. 30, 2014 versus South Dakota State.



Denver heads back on the road to take on Belmont on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 12 p.m. MT in a game that can be heard on Mile High Sports Radio 94.1 FM.
