DENVER - The University of Denver men's hockey team fell 6-3 to Western Michigan on Saturday night at Magness Arena.
The Pioneers (5-3-0, 2-2-0-0 NCHC) were led by sophomore Trevor Moore (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) who scored his second goal of the season and also had his seventh assist on the season. Senior defenseman Joey LaLeggia (Burnaby, B.C) recorded his 97th career point with his first period goal.
The Pioneers outshot Western Michigan (3-5-0, 1-3-0-0 NCHC) 38-26, but goalie Frank Slubowski made 35 saves to earn the victory for the Broncos.
Western Michigan took an early 1-0 lead on a breakaway goal by Aidan Muir who was able to beat Evan Cowley (Evergreen, Colorado) with the backhand. Just 1:03 later the Broncos was able to pick up the puck in the slot and slip one past a screened Cowley.
LaLeggia cut the lead to 2-1 with an absolutely beautiful wrister from the top of the slot area, assists on the goal went to Nolan Zajac (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Cowley. Western Michigan added two more goals in the period to lead 4-1 after the first period. Freshman Tanner Jaillet (Red Deer, Alberta) replaced Cowley at the 18:37 mark of the first period.
Senior center Daniel Doremus (Aspen, Colo.) was able to put home the rebound after Western Michigan's goalie robbed freshman Danton Heinen (Langley, B.C.) on the doorstep. Trailing 5-2 in the second period Moore roofed a wrister top shelf from the edge of the right circle. Heinen picked up the assist on the goal, which was his fifth on the season.
DU outshot the Broncos 18-5 in the second period. Western Michigan picked up an empty-net goal in the third period.
The Crimson and Gold honored the parents and family members of the players during the first period intermission.
The Pioneers will play the fifth game of their current seven-game homestand Friday night November 14th when they host in-state rival and NCHC member Colorado College in the Gold Pan series. Puck drop is set for 7:36 p.m. MT, a game that will also be streamed live on Pioneer Vision.
