Laramie, Wyo. - The University of Denver men's basketball team fell to the Wyoming Cowboys 68-42 Thursday night at the Arena-Auditorium. The Cowboys improved to 7-0 on the season on their home court.
The Pioneers were led by senior guard Cam Griffin(San Antonio, Texas) who scored 13 points, grabbed five rebounds and had two steals. Senior Brett Olson(Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored eight points, dished out four assists and grabbed three rebounds.
After a back and forth first half Denver (3-3) was never able to recover from a 17-5 Wyoming (7-0) run to start the second half. Wyoming shot lights out in the second half making 70.6 percent (12-of-17). The Cowboys came into tonight's contest as the fourth best field goal percentage team in the country.
Denver finished the game shooting 38.5 percent (15-of-39), while Wyoming shot 59.5 percent (22-of-37). The Pioneers shot 27.8 percent from behind the 3-point line (5-of-18).
The first half was a half of runs as the Pioneers jumped out to a 9-2 lead, which was answered by a 7-0 Cowboys run answered by a 5-0 Pios run and finished with a 12-0 Wyoming run.
The Crimson and Gold were led in the first half by Griffin who scored three points and grabbed three rebounds. Fouls were an issue in the first half as Denver was whistled for 12 compared to seven for Wyoming. Nine of the healthy 11 Pioneers saw action in the first half.
Denver trailed at half 27-20. The Pioneers shot 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from the floor while the Cowboys hit for 50.0 percent (10-of-20) in the first half. Wyoming shot 10 free throws compared to just three for Denver in the first half.
Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year Larry Nance Jr. led Wyoming with 17 points and five rebounds. Parker, Colo. native Josh Adams added 11 points.
Notes:Marcus Byrd (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) made his third career start replacing the injured Daniel Amigo (El Paso, Texas). Freshman forward/center Christian Mackey (Kirtland, New Mexico)scored a career-high five points.
Denver stays on the road and travels to Corpus Christi to take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 12 p.m. MT in a game that can be heard on Mile High Sports Radio 94.1 FM.
