DENVER - Cam Griffin (San Antonio, Texas) scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds but it was not enough as the University of Denver men's basketball team fell to Bryant University 48-46 on Sunday afternoon at Magness Arena.
Bryant Rucker (Frisco, Texas) came off the bench to score 11 points in 19 minutes. The Pioneers (5-7) came back from 14 points down in the second half and took a three point lead with 39 seconds remaining in the game, but Dyami Starks hit a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left to tie the game and after a DU turnover he then hit the game-winning jumper with 1.3 seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs (3-5) the victory.
"It was a gut wrenching loss," head coach Joe Scott said. "We gave Bryant opportunities all game long and when we got our opportunities we didn't capitalize and they did."
Brett Olson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored eight points and Jalen Love (Wichita, Kan.) scored six points and dished out three assists. Marcus Byrd (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) chipped in five points and four rebounds.
The Crimson and Gold went a perfect 19-of-19 from the free-throw line which tied the school-record for most free-throws made without a miss.
After scoring only 12 first half points and seeing themselves down by 14 points early in the second half the Pioneers went 23-7 run to take a 35-33 lead with 6:21 remaining in the game that saw neither team lead by more than three points the rest of the game.
Denver finished the game shooting 35.1 percent (13-of-37), while Bryant shot 40.0 percent (16-of-40). The Pioneers shot 7.7 percent from behind the 3-point line (1-of-13) and with the one make now have made at least one 3-pointer in 267 straight games. Bryant shot 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from 3-point range.
The Pioneers came out cold in the first half scoring only 12 points, its lowest point total in a half since Dec. 29, 2013 at UTEP when they had 14 points. Griffin and Olson led DU with four points apiece.
Denver trailed at half 22-12 after Bryant finished the half on a 12-2 run.
Denver shot 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from the floor while Bryant hit for 33.3 percent (7-of-21) in the first half. The Pioneers were held without a 3-pointer in the first half (0-of-7). The Bulldogs shot 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from behind the 3-point line.
The Bulldogs were led by Starks who scored 21 points.
Notes: The 19-of-19 was the sixth time in school history that the Pioneers were perfect from the charity stripe (min. 13 attempts). The 19 makes without a miss tied the 2004-05 team which had the same mark on Feb. 19, 2005 at New Mexico State.
Denver will continue its homestand next Monday, Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. MT as they welcome Saint Joseph's in a game that can be seen on ROOT Sports and heard on Mile High Sports Radio 94.1 FM.
