Denver Men's Soccer Wraps up Spring Schedule

DENVER - The University of Denver men’s soccer team hosted a successful event for the program this past weekend. It was a great experience as over 1,800 fans were in attendance to watch the Pioneers defeat Air Force 1-0 in the 6th-annual “College Soccer Saturday” match. Sophomore Jordan Schweitzer scored the only goal of the match off a corner kick from Karsten Hanlin. After that, the Pioneers defense did the rest, limiting Air Force to one shot during the game.

“It was an absolutely fantastic weekend for the University of Denver men’s soccer program and the University of Denver as a whole," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "To be able to have over 1,800 soccer fans on campus during the weekend between the youth clinic and the game on Saturday is nothing short of outstanding. Also, to finish the spring with two-straight shutout wins at home gives the team some great confidence heading to the fall season.”

The weekend long affair started on Friday, April 25, as DU hosted its annual “Free Spring Clinic” for boys and girls ages 5-13. Over 175 kids honed their soccer skills with the help of the DU men's team and the coaching staff on the brand new Diane Wendt Athletic Fields.

Also, participating in the “College Soccer Saturday” were 15 youth soccer teams from various youth clubs in Colorado. Youth teams played short-sided games at halftime of the game and teams walked out pre-game and worked as ball boys during the match.

During halftime of the game, the DU men’s team also presented a check for $3,000 to Porter Adventist Hospital as a result of the program’s fundraising from its 2014 Goal-A-Thon.

With the conclusion of Saturday’s game, the Pioneers have finished their 2014 spring schedule, and will now wait until the end of August for its first game. The program’s 2014 fall schedule will be announced next month as Denver will look to defend its Summit League crown from 2013 and make a return trip to the NCAA Tournament.
