Denver Heads to UMass for Summit League Clash Saturday

The Pioneers and Minutemen set for rematch of 2024 NCAA Quarterfinal in the first conference match between the two programs

DENVER – The University of Denver men's soccer team will make its first of three trips to the east coast in the month of October when the Pioneers travel to UMass for the first Summit League meeting between the two programs. Kickoff on the Summit League Network is set for 12 p.m. ET/10 a.m. MT.    

DENVER VS. UMASS SERIES HISTORY:
Denver and UMass met for the first time last season, with Denver taking the NCAA Quarterfinal meeting by a count of 3-0 to advance to the second College Cup in program history. The Pioneers outshot UMass 12-6, and had a 6-3 edge in corners. FULL RECAP

LAST TIME OUT:
Denver opened the league campaign with a 2-1 win over Kansas City last Saturday at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. The Pioneers got goals from Bryce Willoughby and Ian Welch in the victory. Senior goalkeeper Isaac Nehme made a career-high eight saves in the win. FULL RECAP 

TOP-10 SINCE 2015

  • Denver is 129-44-33 since the start of the 2015 season.
  • That record is good for sixth in the country in wins during that span, behind Wake Forest (157), Indiana (148), Clemson (146), Georgetown (139), Stanford (135).
  • Of the 27 teams that had at least 100 wins in that span entering the year, Denver has the sixth-fewest losses at 44.
  • Six of Denver's opponents are among the 27 that began the year with 100 wins since the start of the 2015 season.

DENVER IN THE SUMMIT LEAGUE REGULAR SEASON

  • In Summit League regular season play since the Pioneers joined the league in 2013, Denver is 61-8-9.
  • Since Jamie Franks took over in 2015, Denver is 52-6-8.
  • Denver has won 10 of a possible 12 regular season titles since joining the league.

RECORD BOOK WATCH

  • Career Shutouts: Isaac Nehme broke the career shutouts record in the Pios 2024 NCAA Second Round win with his 27th, and now has 30.
  • Career Goalkeeper Wins: Isaac Nehme broke the career goalkeeper wins record on August 31 vs. SIUE (2-1), capturing his 43rd victory to pass Nick Gardner (2014-18). Nehme now has 47.
  • Career Saves: Isaac Nehme has 166 career saves to sit fourth in Denver's DI history in career saves. Nehme is 28 saves behind Parker Jarvis (1999-01) for third on the list.
  • Career Matches Started: Isaac Nehme enters Saturday having made 74 career starts. With a start Saturday, Nehme will move into fifth in program history in career starts. Trevor Wright is one start behind Nehme and will tie for sixth in program history with his next start.
  • Career Matches Played: With his next appearance, Dylan Akau will tie Nat Borchers for 14th in program history in career appearances. Isaac Nehme will move into 16th in career appearances.

KELLY CALLED INTO NEW ZEALAND U-20S FOR 2025 WORLD CUP

  • Sophomore Keegan Kelly was named to the New Zealand U-20 National Team squad on September 11 for the upcoming 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup set to begin in Chile later this month.
  • Denver's match on Sept. 14th vs. Mercer was his final match with the Pioneers before leaving for international duty on September 16.
  • New Zealand's group stage matches are Sept. 27 vs. Chile (L, 2-1), Sept. 30 vs. Egypt (W, 2-1) and Oct. 3 vs. Japan (FS2).
  • Kelly scored four goals and had three assists in 21 matches in his freshman season, including goals in back-to-back NCAA Tournament matches against Gardner-Webb and Indiana  - the first Pioneer to score in back-to-back postseason games in program history.
  • Kelly joined Kortne Ford, Andre Shinyashiki and Kengo Ohira, and the quartet were later joined by Sam Bassett as the only Pios to score two NCAA Tournament goals in program history.

  • Denver is 151-11-19 when scoring first since head coach Jamie Franks joined the staff as an assistant in 2012.
  • Since Franks took over as the head coach in 2015, the Pioneers are 116-9-13 when scoring first.

  • Jamie Franks has put his program up against the best once again with his 2025 schedule that was announced in July.
  • Denver's opponents combined for a 173-99-73 record a year ago, and had an RPI average of 54.5.
  • The Pios play 10 NCAA Tournament teams from last season, including six that got to at least the third round and a pair of NCAA Quarterfinal opponents in Pittsburgh and UMass.
  • Nine of Denver's opponents appeared in the United Soccer Coaches' Preseason Poll.
  • In the regular season, Denver will 14 opponents that finished in last season's RPI in the Top-100 (three more than last season), eight from the Top-50 (one less than 2024) and five in the Top-20 (one more). 
  • Denver's 2025 results against teams that finished 2024 in the top-100.
