DENVER -- Bryant Rucker (Frisco, Texas) scored 17 points as the University of Denver men's basketball team fell to the Wyoming Cowboys 68-52 Wednesday evening at Magness Arena.
The Pioneers (5-2) led 48-47 before the Cowboys (5-2) went on a 16-0 and a 21-4 overall run to close out the game. Wyoming senior Josh Adams scored a game-high 19 points as the Cowboys were able to snap Denver's five-game winning streak. The win was also the first in the series by a road team since 2001.
"We didn't start well," head coach Joe Scott said. "I thought we fought. We didn't play our best basketball but we're still young. Things didn't click, but you've got to give Wyoming credit for that. They're a good defensive team."
Joe Rosga (St. Paul, Minn.) scored eight points and added four rebounds, while Thomas Neff (Arvada, Colo.) added four points and a team-high five rebounds for the game.
The Crimson and Gold started just 1-of-10 from the field and didn't score until five minutes into the game, and trailed by as many as 11 in the first half before rallying with a 9-0 run late in the first half to pull within a 27-25 margin at the break.
Marcus Byrd (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) led the Pioneers with nine points, followed by Rosga, Rucker and Daniel Amigo (El Paso, Texas), who each had four in the first 20 minutes. Nate Engesser (Colorado Springs, Colo.), the team's leading scorer, was limited to two points and one assist in the first half.
Denver shot 38.5 percent from the field (10-of-26), but went on a momentous, 9-of-17 run to finish the half and draw to within two. It was held to just one three-pointer on nine tries in the first half.
The Pioneers also limited Wyoming star guard Josh Adams, (24.6 points per game) to just one field goal on four tries and five points total in the first half.
Wyoming connected for 52.9 percent of its shots and sank all five free throws in the first 20 minutes.
Denver shot a season-low 40.4 percent (19-of-47), to Wyoming's 52.6 percent (20-of-38) from the field for the game. The Pioneers shot an ice-cold 15.8 percent from behind the 3-point line (3-of-19). The Cowboys hit 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from 3-point range.
"We didn't shoot the ball well all game," Scott added. "The ball rolled around and out. It didn't matter if it was a layup. It didn't matter if it was a post move. It didn't matter if it was a three-point shot. We had a lot of balls around and out, but again, I thought we did a good job and that's what our young team has got to learn."
Notes: The Pioneers have now hit a 3-pointer in 292 consecutive games. C.J. Bobbitt (Harker Heights, Texas) missed the game due to illness.
Denver will end its five-game homestand on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. MT against Scott's former team the Air Force Falcons. The game can be seen on ROOT Sports with Mike Evans and Greg Lackey on the call. The game can also be heard on Mile High Sports Radio AM1340 with Raj Sharan on the call and streamed via Pioneer Vision (audio only).
