LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The University of Denver volleyball team (7-2) fell to Oklahoma 3-1 (20-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-27) Friday in its second match of the Borderland Classic.
Denver struggled against the Sooners, hitting .108 in the first set compared to Oklahoma's .321. Moni Corrujedo (El Paso, Texas) led the Pioneers with 11 kills. Senior Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) earned nine kills on 16 total attacks and four blocks in the match.
Schmid led the Pioneers in the third set, which Denver claimed 25-23, with five kills. Cassie Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) pitched in four kills in the third set. The Pioneers also held the Sooners to a .024 hitting percentage. Denver recorded 20 digs in the set, led by libero Cassidy Rooke (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) with eight digs in the third set.
The match was a close one. Each set experienced at least six ties, including the third set undergoing 11 ties before Denver won it.
DU excelled from the service line throughout the match. Three Pioneers, Schmid, Rooke and Piyusha Boteju (Euless, Texas), recorded two service aces in the match, with Baird and Monique Domme (Colorado Springs, Colo.) each tallying one service ace.
The Pioneers continue play at the Borderland Classic in Las Cruces, N.M. tomorrow. Denver will face host New Mexico State at 12 p.m. MT and Brown at 7 p.m. MT.
