DU Hosts First Home Matches in Pioneer Classic

DENVER -The University of Denver volleyball team will host UT Arlington (2-2), Air Force (1-4) and Villanova (3-1) in day two of the Pioneer Classic in Hamilton Gymnasium Saturday September 5.

The Pioneers defeated the Mavericks 3-2 in their first home match of the season. Cassie Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) led Denver with 16 kills, a.400 hitting percentage and three service aces.

The match vs. Air Force will air on Altitude at 12:30 p.m. MT with Mike Evans on the play-by-play call.

Pioneer Classic

About Denver: The Pioneers opened up the season in the San Francisco Invitational. Denver defeated Bakersfield and San Diego State but fell to host San Francisco in the final match of the tournament. Kayla Principato and Moni Corrujedo picked up All-Tournament honors for the Pioneers, tallying 28 and 27 kills, respectively.

UT Arlington: DU is 3-1 all-time vs. UT Arlington, most recently defeating the Mavericks 3-2 last season. The Mavericks are 2-1 so far with both wins coming in straight sets.

Air Force: The Pioneers have a long history with Air Force. The teams have met 47 previous times, 12 as Division I programs. Last season, Denver defeated Air Force 3-0. The Falcons are 1-3 on the season, with their lone win vs. Northeastern.

Villanova: This is the first meeting between Villanova and Denver. The Wildcats are 2-1 on the season, beating Stony Brook 3-1 and Buffalo 3-0. Villanova's loss was to reigning National Champion Penn State.

Denver Season Tickets

Tickets for the 2015 season are on sale now, here. The University of Denver will begin its home schedule with the Denver Invitational, taking on Air Force, Texas- Arlington and Villanova on Fri., Sept. 4 and Sat., Sept. 5.

The Pioneers' home schedule also features Western Michigan; UIC, Montana and Abilene Christian in the Denver Invitational; Northern Colorado and Summit League opponents.

DU, the reigning Summit League Champion, will also host the Summit League Championships Fri., Nov. 20 through Sun., Nov. 22.

BEING THE BEST

The Pioneers' 27-win season featured top-10 finishes in 16 statistical categories since the team turned Division I in 1998: kills (1719), kills pet set (14.09), attack attempts (4451), attack percentage (.266), assists (1595), assists per set (13.1), service aces (142), service attempts (2824), serve percentage (.916), digs (1919), digs per set (15.7), reception percentage (.936), block assists (448), total blocks (256.0), sets played (122) and matches played (34). The records for matches played and attack percentage tied for first, digs per set and digs are the second-most, and kills are third. DU finished in the top 30 in the nation in many categories as well, including kills, kills per set, hitting percentage, assists and assists per set.

SUMMIT STARS

Denver's players were rewarded with recognition by the Summit League. Nola Basey and Sarah Schmid were named to the All-Summit Team in 2014. Schmid also earned Academic All-League as well as an All-Tournament Team selection.

CAPTIVATING CAREERS

Junior outside hitters Moni Corrujedo and Nola Basey and senior middle blocker Sarah Schmid have all made their way into the career record books. Corrujedo has recorded the fourth-best kills per set performance with 3.22 (734 k - 228 s). Basey is tied for ninth in career kills per set with 2.99 (682 k - 228 s). Schmid leads all Pioneers in career attack percentage with .363 (460 k - 90 e - 1018 att.). Basey's 1,248 attack attempts are the eighth-most in a single-season and Schmid's .375 attack percentage is the fourth-most in Denver history and was the 36th best finish in 2014.

PRINCIPATO AND DOMME SET CAREER BESTS

Sophomore right-side hitter Kayla Principato earned a career-high 14 kills in the season opener vs. Bakersfield. She has beaten her 2014 high for kills in every game this season. Setter Monique Domme also set a career best in the first game of the season with 24 assists in the match, a record she beat the next match with 27 assists vs. San Diego State.
