DENVER - The 48th-ranked University of Denver men's tennis team beat the No. 68 University of Utah 5-2 today in their first outdoor home match of the 2016 season.
The Pios went 4-1 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles.
"I thought it was a great match," head coach Ricardo Rubio said. "The doubles point was key. It was critical, it was very close in all three matches and after we won it, I thought that we had a lot of momentum going into the singles matches. We won four out of the six first sets in singles and we were able to finish it out."
DU received singles victories from Henry Craig (Murietta, Calif.), Diogo Rocha (Lisbon, Portugal), Alex Gasson (Alton, United Kingdom) and Yannik James (St. Georges, Grenada). The Pioneers also earned two victories in their doubles matches with wins coming from the pairs of Craig/Rocha and James/Jesse Ruder-Hook (Denver, Colo.).
"Great job at singles spots one and two with Henry Craig and Diogo Rocha," Rubio added. "After losing to Iowa and Drake, I thought the team bounced back pretty well. Now we have practice tomorrow and then get ready to play Penn on Sunday."
Denver will host the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday, March 6 at Stapleton Tennis Pavilion at 12:00 p.m. MT.
